What a Senator’s AI Roundtable Taught Me About the Workforce Gap and What We Can Do About It?

I recently had the honor of participating in an AI roundtable at Virginia Commonwealth University alongside U.S. Senator Mark Warner and leaders from across the Commonwealth. The conversation centered on AI, workforce development, education, and small business readiness. It left me both inspired and more determined than ever about the work we are doing at Lotus Love Digital Solutions.
The Workforce Gap Is Real — and the Clock Is Ticking
One of the most sobering realities discussed at the roundtable was the gap we are already seeing between the jobs AI may reduce, reshape, or eliminate and the new roles that will eventually emerge. Some experts believe this transition may unfold over the next several years, but for many workers and small business owners, that window already feels very close.
Consider what is already happening across industries:
Customer service, administrative support, legal research, marketing, operations, and entry-level professional roles are already being reshaped by AI. Some companies are slowing hiring, redesigning teams, or shifting routine work from people to AI-powered systems.
These are not distant predictions. They are early signals of a workforce transition that is already underway. The question is not whether AI will change jobs. The question is whether communities like ours will prepare people fast enough to move into the roles that are emerging.
Senator Warner challenged the room directly: build a concrete map showing how workers in this region can move from the roles being disrupted to the roles that are growing. Name the training. Name the credential pathways. Name the employers who will actually hire.
That challenge stayed with me.
AI Readiness Is Not About Technology. It Is About People.
The clearest takeaway from the roundtable was this: AI readiness is not just about technology. It is about helping people build the skills needed to adapt, grow, and succeed.
Virginia is well-positioned to lead. The Commonwealth has research institutions, policy relationships, business leaders, workforce organizations, and an entrepreneurial community that can respond to this moment. But progress will not happen through policy alone. Small businesses, training providers, nonprofits, schools, and community organizations all have a role to play.

Virginia Can Lead — But Only If We Act Now
The emails that followed the roundtable were telling. People went to work that same weekend — building frameworks, mapping credential pathways, and identifying employer commitments. The urgency was real because the stakes are real.
This kind of regional specificity is still rare. Virginia has a sitting Senator’s challenge to answer and a community ready to rise to it.
I am proud to be part of that community. I am also committed to making sure small businesses and everyday professionals in Hampton Roads, Williamsburg, and beyond are not left behind in this transition.
